Zone Of Elongation
Zone of Elongation.--Located just behind the zone of cell division, the zone of elongation is where cells quickly increase in size and volume. Each cell grows parallel in direction to the axis of the root, and they appear rectangular in shape.
As the cells elongate, the cell walls become thicker and the protoplasm (living contents within the cell) no longer fills the cell but is usually confined to a think layer lining several walls. The center of the cell becomes filled with a tiny droplet of cell sap (water and other dissolved substances). The tissue of these soft, watery cells are called parenchyma.
